To all potential clients and fellow lovers of photography, a little about myself and my particular philosophy on teaching and sharing what I have learned over the landscape of time working with students at various skill levels, photographic abilities, varied desired goals and outcomes with their photography and work.

First and foremost I am a teacher. I love teaching, and have been teaching in many capacities throughout my adult life. I call my unique approach, "Epic Photo Tours" because I thrive on chasing wild light; sharing the epic adventure of the wilderness with others; and of course I absolutely love all things photography! My tours allow students a broad spectrum of learning styles that run the gambit between the analytical, classroom/curriculum based style of learning to the adventurist who wants to take those skills into the field. Theory is great and necessary but practical experience is an awesome adventure. I desire students to experience the entire spectrum available whether they consider themselves a simple hobbyist to those who desire to pursue photography as a profession. I approach my tour/workshops with wholeness, balance, a sense of awe and a splash of helping clients step out of their comfort zone. My priority is to ensure my clients get the best shots and hands on experience. To be clear, I call my tours "tour/workshops" because I like to strike a balance between the two extremes of sometimes overly ridged, dryer curriculum based "workshops" on one hand, and the other extreme of tour /guiding without direct, individualized teaching. So, think a hybrid of the two where flexibility, spontaneity and guiding is foundational but you wont leave feeling like you did not get the necessary instruction you desired. Most of my clients enjoy the time so much they pursue ongoing tours with me. Thus my tours book up quickly.

I was raised in the Pacific Northwest by a world class climber, avid mountaineer and amateur photographer who had me climbing mountains and enjoying the wilderness before I could form words. I love leading small groups, large groups or working with individuals. My father loved people, loved being in the wilderness, and still does to this day. This is where my love of people and the outdoors came from and the reason I desire to share my knowledge and skills with others via exciting photo journeys. Indeed I can say it is in my DNA and nothing gives me more pleasure than meeting new people, building relationships and friendships while enjoying the benefits of being a professional photographer and teacher.

I have been working in the field for a couple decades, and now lead at least 10 tour/workshops annually. Current tours are focused on the Pacific Northwest, the Southwest, Glacier National Park, The Canadian Rockies and increasingly abroad. All my workshop/tours are designed to put you in the very best locations at the optimal times to capture nature in all its glory and in its finest moments. I work with my clients to create a custom itinerary that is inclusive of the types of photos and experiences they want while remaining flexible to the conditions and weather, allowing clients the best opportunities to capture awesome photos!

I have trips suited to all abilities and fitness levels, from very moderate to the extreme; as well as a wide array of preferences, allowing me to cater to client’s needs and goals. To ensure individualized attention, group tours no longer number above 6 participants. Please contact me for detailed information on tour availability.

Lastly, I offer clients help with post production needs and training! Many of my tours include a full day of post-production learning so they can develop their images to their fullest potential. I have over 10 years of expertise in teaching post production and master print making, and have worked for not only myself but many of the finest “fine art” gallery clients. See you in the field!

Description:

When used to their full potential, the Layer Style "Blend If" sliders are "holy grail" of advanced blending in Photoshop! They are some of the least understood, least used, least exploited, yet most powerful and easiest ways to deal with many blending issues, including dynamic range. Instead of complicated layer masks they have the ability to replace most masking techniques for quick and easy, real time dynamic range blending. The Photographs (Cameras, Equipment, Development and Optimization) : THE PHOTOGRAPHS:

Wonderful photos always originate from moments of rare and wonderful light, never a computer!

Only the most pioneering and cutting edge capture, development and print processes are used in the Mark Metternich fine art photography collection. Images are interpreted, developed and color corrected in the digital darkroom using a strict code of conduct.

The images in the collection (a small portion of the collection is displayed online) have been captured on a wide variety of cameras and equipment including (but not limited to):

*Hasselblad H4D - 60, 50, and 40 Medium Format Digital SLR Camera
*Top end 35mm DSLR's (Canon and Nikon)
*Various film cameras including medium and larger formats

Sometimes to produce the highest possible resolution prints, digital stitching and, or focus bracketing is employed. These techniques can allow for matching and even surpassing the resolution and quality of even the largest film formats.

*Though we routinely render/develop our images within the general parameters of popular vivid/contrasty slide films that have been used for decades in landscape photography (such as the beloved Fuji-chrome Velvia) as well as with some "old school" traditional darkroom-like techniques (fine tuned color/tone correction by subtle Dodging, Burning, Contrast Masking, Unsharp Masking...) we do not, in any way, consider this norm either "manipulation" or "Photo-shopping" (faking photos) often extremely ambiguous terms used to over-simplistically discount photography.

With the exception of an occasional *noted artistic liberty (disclosed under the image preview) the unusual moments of "wild light" captured in the collection are NOT "Photo-shopped" (digital creations or faked photos by employing Photoshop trickery)

No artificial lighting, unnatural color filtration, or color lens filters are used in the development of these photographs.

Waiting for many hours, days, or even sometimes years for "wild light" is the foundational method employed.

Mark Metternich is a professional landscape photographer based out of Portland, Oregon, USA who spends much of his time on the road leading landscape workshop/tours across the western US and abroad. When not doing that, Mark produces post production training videos and teaches post production (via Skype) to fine art photographers. Mark is a digital imaging specialist and master gallery print maker who loves teaching as much as he enjoys producing fine art. Marks fine art landscape prints are found sold to a wide array of people, businesses and organizations around the world.

Having a world class mountaineer (and avid nature photographer) as a father and a prolific artist as a mother was a great influential blessing. Mark and his wife (Jennifer) reside in Oregon with their two dogs. Mark enjoys giving back by teaching the skills he has acquired to various photographic enthusiasts through scenic photography tour/workshops, producing a wide variety of educational materials as well as doing private/hourly online post production training (via Skype). Mark passionately and tirelessly enjoys serving the public by constantly working at mastering the craft of bringing the awe of creation into people’s homes. He thrives on continual education and staying on the cutting edge of photographic technology and master print development (for both himself and clients). Mark also enjoys involving himself (with his wife) in various volunteer/nonprofit humanitarian/philanthropic work (such as, but not limited to, development work for orphans in various countries in Africa).
